Biosafe has launched a new initiative to support safety assessments of cell-cultured food products with advanced laboratory services.
As cultivated meat, seafood, plant cell-based and cell-culture foods move from lab to market, ensuring product safety has become more critical than ever. To support this fast-evolving industry, Biosafe is expanding its laboratory capabilities to better serve companies working with bioreactor-grown food products.
In March 2025, Biosafe launched a publicly funded development project to define the specialized testing and analytical services needed for regulatory safety assessments of cultivated meat and cell-culture food. The initiative focuses on aligning future laboratory services with the expectations of authorities in the EU, US, Singapore, and other markets.
"Cultivated foods are entering the regulatory spotlight. Our aim is to provide the right tools, grounded in science and fit for purpose, to support companies in building a robust safety narrative," says Dr. Vesa Turkki, Project Specialist at Biosafe.
Engaging the industry to shape the future
To ensure the services meet real-world needs, Dr. Turkki from Biosafe is actively engaging with companies developing cell-cultured products, as well as regulatory experts and authorities worldwide to gather their insights and requirements. These interviews will help define the analytics, toxicological tests, and molecular characterisation methods required for approval across jurisdictions.
The current phase of the project runs through August 2025. Companies participating in the development phase will receive priority access to the newly developed services, giving them a head start in regulatory readiness.
"We invite all companies working on cultivated food and cell-culture technologies to join the conversation," adds Janne Ylärinne, Sales Director at Biosafe. "This is a shared opportunity to shape the future of food safety."
