Biosafe at the Future of Protein Production in Amsterdam

Biosafe’s Regulatory and Scientific Expert Paula Pescador and Sales Director Janne Ylärinne will be representing us at the Future of Protein Production 2026 in Amsterdam on 4–5 November 2026.

Paula will also take the stage at the co-located Cultured Meat Symposium (CMS), joining the discussion “Safety, Trust and Scale: Navigating the Hidden Risks in Cellular Agriculture” on 4 November.

The event brings together the alternative protein ecosystem, from plant-based and fermentation-derived proteins to cultivated meat and other emerging food technologies. This year, The Future of Protein Production is co-located with the Cultured Meat Symposium, with two conference programmes covering science, production, regulation, scale-up and commercialisation.

For Biosafe, many of the most interesting discussions sit exactly where science meets the realities of bringing novel products to market.

Here are five sessions that caught our attention.

Top 5 picks for The Future of Protein Production 2026

4 November, 14:55–15:30

Safety, Trust and Scale: Navigating the Hidden Risks in Cellular Agriculture

Naturally, this is our number one pick.

Biosafe’s Paula Pescador joins a panel discussion on the safety questions becoming increasingly important as cultivated and fermented proteins move closer to commercial reality. The session will look at topics including contamination risk, genetic stability, media components, scaffolds, allergens and toxicology, and how companies can build safety, quality assurance and regulatory confidence as production scales.

Panellists: Svenja Dannewitz, CEO, Senara GmbH; Paula Pescador, Regulatory and Scientific Expert, Biosafe; Ruth Wonfor, Professor, Aberystwyth University; and Julia Marschallinger, Regulatory Scientist, Vireo Advisors LLC.

4 November, 10:15–11:00

Food Security, Sovereignty and Geopolitical Risk

Alternative proteins are increasingly part of a much bigger conversation about food security. This panel asks how fermentation, novel proteins, regional manufacturing and diversified feedstocks could make food systems more resilient to geopolitical and supply-chain disruption.

An interesting way to start the event by looking at protein innovation as strategic infrastructure rather than simply a new product category.

Speakers: Zbigniew Lewicki, Unilever; Jasmijn De Boo, ProVeg International; Didier Toubia, Aleph Farms; Anne Reshetnyak, Good Food Institute; John Clarke, former EU Commission Director for International Affairs; and Katrien Martens, The Protein Project.

4 November, 12:15–13:00

Where Is Cultivated Meat Really, in 2026?

A reality check from some of the companies closest to the action.

The panel moves beyond early expectations around cultivated meat to examine manufacturing, regulatory progress, funding, partnerships and realistic commercialisation timelines. For companies developing complex novel foods, the lessons around scale-up and regulatory planning should resonate well beyond cultivated meat itself.

Speakers: Roman Lauš, Mewery; Ido Savir, SuperMeat; Sebastian Rakers, Bluu; Didier Toubia, Aleph Farms; and Jo Anne Shatkin, Vireo Advisors.

4 November, 14:20–14:55

Cracking the Cost Curve: The Science Behind Scaling Cultivated Meat

Here the focus gets technical. Cell culture media remain a major scientific and economic challenge for cultivated meat, involving growth factors, recombinant proteins, food-grade ingredients and scalable supply chains.

The discussion should offer an interesting view of what happens when sophisticated biotechnology has to make the transition from laboratory conditions to food-grade production at commercially realistic costs.

Speakers: Jette Feveile Young, Aarhus University; Amy Cochrane, biofás; Bruna Anza, Kerlen Science; and Harsh Amin, Ivy Farm Technologies.

4 November, 16:20–17:00

Regulation as Growth Infrastructure

As alternative proteins approach commercialisation, regulatory strategy increasingly influences development decisions, investment and market entry. This panel asks how regulators and innovators can work together to create clearer and more predictable approval pathways while maintaining high standards of food safety.

It also tackles a question we follow closely at Biosafe: how Europe’s regulatory environment can influence its competitiveness in food innovation.

Speakers: Jo Anne Shatkin, Vireo Advisors; Evangelos Katsoulis, Food Standards Scotland; Montserrat Cerrato, Argenta; Ralph Langholz, Swiss Protein Association; and Vince Sewalt, Sewalt Bioconsulting.

5 November, 14:20–15:00

Europe’s Protein Competitiveness Gap

Europe has world-class food science and biotechnology research. The harder question is how effectively that expertise turns into commercial products, manufacturing capacity and growing companies.

This panel looks at investment, policy, regulation and industrial scale-up, and asks what Europe needs to do to remain competitive as protein innovation accelerates elsewhere. It is a particularly timely discussion for companies deciding where to develop, manufacture and launch their next-generation food products.

Speakers: Roderik Bronkhorst, Royal Cosun & Revyve; Julia Vol, Make A Splash; Robert Carleke, Inter IKEA Group; Imran Afzal, NAPIC; and Diana Rucinschi, European Innovation Council.
