Introduction
Biosafe's webinars are open and free for everyone interested in regulatory, safety or scientific issues surrounding regulated microbial products used in food and feed. Our webinars promote discussions, educate professionals and bring out interesting technologies or standards in the field. We welcome your ideas for future topics too.

What's in a name? Recent changes in microbial taxonomy
Speaker:
Atte von Wright, Scientific Advisor, Professor, Biosafe
The modern molecular biological methods of taxonomy have often challenged the established taxonomical relationships that were based mainly on phenotypic characteristics. Typical examples are the recent division of the genus Lactobacillus into 23 different genera, and the recognition of at least 17 “clades” of Bacilli, with novel nomenclature. This situation can create confusion, and sometimes the taxonomical changes also affect the safety assessment of a bacterium.
Professor Atte von Wright explains how to navigate the ever-changing taxonomic landscape, especially for bacteria relevant to food and feed applications.
