Bacteria constantly face rapidly changing environments, and they need to adapt their metabolism quickly to variable nutritional challenges, external stress factors and exposure to potentially lethal chemical environments. The induction (and repression) of genes at a short notice is one of the key strategies to optimize the use of limited resources or to mobilize defense mechanisms. Some of the induction mechanisms have evolved into really elaborate molecular machineries acting at different levels of gene expression. They ought to be taken also into account in the safety assessment of bacteria, in particular when assessing the antibiotic resistance and stress responses. Examples of these cases will be introduced in this webinar recording.
